Awadhi / Uttar Pradesh

Homespun

My grandparents speak Awadhi. Every transcription app I tried either flattened their words into standard Hindi or gave up entirely, because Awadhi is treated as a broken version of a language instead of a language. So I retrained a speech model on the dialect, so my siblings and I can keep what they actually said rather than a tidied-up version of it.

The testimony

Recorded answers from Awadhi speakers describing the customs around birth, marriage and mourning. Each quotation is the corpus transcription, unaltered, and plays in the speaker's own voice. The English beneath it is machine translation, offered so the testimony can be followed; where the translator was not confident, none is shown.
